Presentation

History of regurgitation after eating since owners acquired the kitten.

Patient Data

Age: 3 months
Gender: Male
Category: Domestic cat
Organism: Domestic shorthaired cat

Thorax

x-ray

There is focal severe dilation of the esophagus cranial to the heart on the right lateral projection. There is focal leftward deviation of the trachea just cranial to the heart best noted on the VD projection. The heart is enlarged. The pulmonary parenchyma is within normal limits. The liver is enlarged compatible with the patients age. There are only 7 sternal segments.

A lateral thoracotomy was performed to access, ligate, and transect the persistent right aortic arch. This alleviated the external constriction of the esophagus and trachea.

Diagnosis

The persistent right aortic arch was surgically ligated. There was no indication of additional heart disease, although echocardiography was not performed.
