Patient Data

Age: 9
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Border Collie

Cystogram

x-ray

There is a radiopaque calculus visible in the penile urethra on the plain radiographs. On several sequential radiographs between hydropropulsion attempts, the calculus moves from distal to proximal. With positive contrast urethrography, the calculus is visible as an intraluminal filling defect in the membranous urethra. Finally, the calculus is visible as a filling defect in the bladder on the last radiograph.

Case Discussion

The calculus was surgically removed and found to be 100% silica.

This calculus is visible on plain radiographs, but some are radiolucent. Positive contrast urethrography is a good technique to clearly outline either type. It also has the added benefit of a possible therapeutic technique.
