Presentation
Presents with 1 week history of right pelvic limb lameness which started after being knocked over by two larger dogs.
Left stifle: There are multiple open physes compatible with the juvenile status of the patient. No osseous abnormalities are appreciated.
Right stifle: There is an avulsion fracture of the right tibial tuberosity with proximal and slight lateral displacement. There is a smaller fracture fragment situated just distal to the displaced tibial tuberosity. Distal to the avulsion fracture there is a mild periosteal reaction on the dorsal aspect of the tibia. There is increased soft tissue thickness on the dorsal and lateral aspect of the right pelvic limb extending from the proximal tibia to the mid distal tibial diaphysis.
Avulsion and displacement of the right tibial tuberosity with associated soft tissue swelling. Normal left pelvic limb.
Case Discussion
Tibial tuberosity avulsion occurs from excessive tension on the patellar tendon, and the relative weakness of the cartilaginous physis joining the tuberosity to the tibia. Because there is a normal radiolucent line at this location, comparison radiographs of the opposite limb can be helpful for comparison.
