Presentation
Presents with respiratory distress, weight loss, lethargy, and anorexia.
Patient Data
There is markedly increased soft tissue opacity in the cranial mediastinum. The trachea is elevated to the level of the spine, and the carina is displaced caudally. The lung lobes are retracted secondary to the mass effect and a small amount of pleural effusion is present with pleural fissure lines. The cardiac silhouette is not well visualized.
On CT images, the mass is cystic with mostly fluid component and thin contrast-enhancing walls. The mass wraps around the heart on both sides, and the displacement of the heart caudally and dorsally is visible.
Case Discussion
A cystic mass with echogenic contents was seen on ultrasound and CT images. Cystic thymoma was thought probable on examination of fine needle aspirate samples. Radiation therapy was planned to reduce the size of the mediastinal mass.
