x-ray

There is a complete, displaced fracture of the distal right femur through the physis with proximal and lateral displacement of the distal fragment. The metaphysis of the femur appears intact. The patella and fabellae appear normal. There is moderate swelling of the pelvic limb.

Salter-Harris fracture Type 1 of the distal femur. The swelling in the pelvic limb may be from a hematoma or edema.

Case Discussion

Fractures of the physis occur in young animals while the cartilage is less stiff than the bone on either side. Fractures are classified according to the Salter-Harris scheme that describes the direction of trauma and involvement of the metaphysis and epiphysis. This is a simple type I fracture that involves only the physis. The fracture was repaired with cross pins and healed well.
