Presentation
Presents with right thoracic limb lameness after being accidentally stepped on.
Patient Data
There are wedge shaped radiolucencies within the distal metaphysis of the ulna bilaterally, which are continuous with the physis.. Multiple open physes are consistent with the young age of the patient. No fractures are identified.
Case Discussion
Retained cartilage cores are occasionally seen in young large breed dogs. These regions have failed to undergo enchondral ossification and remain cartilage. The disruption of growth can cause angular limb deformities from shortening of the ulna, however they can also be incidental findings that resolve with age. This dog's lameness was not caused by the retained cartilage core, but was likely due to soft tissue trauma.
