Thorax

x-ray

Pyothorax was diagnosed. There is pneumothorax present as a complication of chest tube placement. The lungs are mildly atelectatic, and there is a rounded soft tissue opacity in the left caudal lung lobe. A second mass is visible in the region of the accessory or right caudal lung lobe. The pleural surfaces of the lungs are thickened. The cardiovascular structures are normal in size and shape.

Thorax

ct

CT confirmed multiple cavitary lung masses consistent with abscesses. Abscesses with cavitary regions are seen in both caudal lung lobes in this transverse image. Pneumothorax is visible between the dorsal chest wall and the lungs.

Case Discussion

Diagnosis

Pulmonary abscesses with secondary pyothorax.

Differential diagnosis

None.

Discussion

Resection and histopathology of the masses were consistent with necrotizing pneumonia, fibrosis, and pleuritis.
