Patient Data

Age: 9 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Golden retriever

Thorax

x-ray

There is a large soft tissue opacity mass in the right caudal lung lobe. The right caudal lobe bronchus narrows as it enters the mass. A lobar sign is present between the right caudal and right middle lung lobes on the left lateral projection. The mass is most likely a primary lung tumor.

Case Discussion

Abscess and granuloma are less likely as the dog has no signs of inflammatory disease and is in an older age group. Pulmonary carcinoma was diagnosed on cytology after ultrasound guided fine needle aspirate.

The lobar sign indicates that the mass is filling the lung lobe to the edge bordering the neighboring lung lobe. The pleural surface separates those lobes and forms a barrier. The lobar sign is a result of aerated lung next to soft tissue filled lung.
