Presents with 6-month history of worsening cough after being adopted one year ago.
Patient Data
Multiple large mineralized masses are present within the left caudal, right middle and right caudal lung lobes. The masses are densely mineralized with sharp margins. There is an incidental metallic foreign body in the left body wall.
Case Discussion
On pathology, the masses were diagnosed as mucinous carcinoma with extensive osseous metaplasia. The origin of the tumor was undetermined, and it is unusual for pulmonary masses to have osseous metaplasia. Immunostaining was performed but did not reveal the tissue of origin.
Multiple masses in the thorax are generally due to primary neoplasia with intrapulmonary metastasis, granulomas, or abscesses. The mineral component to these masses suggested a chronic etiology.
