Presentation
Presents with difficulty defecating and left pelvic limb lameness and swelling.
Patient Data
The cardiovascular structures are normal in size and shape. There are multiple variably sized soft tissue opacity nodules throughout the lungs. The largest is present in the left caudal lung lobe. No abnormalities are identified in the pleural space and mediastinum.
There is increased soft tissue opacity in the region of the prostate gland with multifocal mineralization. There is a mass effect ventral to the caudal lumbar vertebrae and there is sclerosis and periosteal reaction on the L7 vertebra. The colon is deviated dorsally within the pelvis. There is irregular new bone production arising from the left ilium with an associated soft tissue mass. There is ventral deviation of the rectum caudal to the ilium on the lateral projection secondary to the mass.
Prostatic carcinoma with metastasis to the spine, pelvis, and lungs.
Case Discussion
Prostatic carcinoma can spread locally to the regional lymph nodes and the vertebral bodies and pelvis, presumably through the lymphatic pathways. Mineralization of the prostate is highly associated with neoplasia in neutered dogs. The mineralization surrounding the vertebral bodies and pelvis appears aggressive and expansile. The colon is subject to mass effects from the enlarged lumbar lymph nodes dorsally, the prostate ventrally, and the iliac mass dorsally.
