Presentation
Adult goldfish swimming inverted for 1 week, coelomic distension.
Patient Data
The coelom is distended. Both of the swim bladders are displaced cranially and ventrally but are filled normally with gas. This displacement is due to a mass effect in the dorsal coelom.
Ultrasound images showed a large, multicystic mass in the dorsal coelom. The cysts were a mix of anechoic and echogenic with septation. The mass was presumed to be renal.
The coelomic mass was cystic and determined to be enlarged kidneys. The swim bladders were cranially and ventrally displaced.
Case Discussion
Coelomic mass, cystic on ultrasound, likely polycystic kidney disease. The mass displaced the swim bladders, which caused the flotation difficulties.
A necropsy was performed, and the kidneys were confirmed to be polycystic with parenchymal atrophy, interstitial fibrosis, and nephritis.
