Pneumonia

Case contributed by Allison L Zwingenberger
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Dyspnea and open mouth breathing, with mucoid nasal discharge.

Patient Data

Age: 8 years
Gender: Spayed female
Category: European rabbit

Thorax

x-ray

There are bronchial and alveolar infiltrates bilaterally in the dependent portions of the lungs. The caudal lung lobes appear hyperinflated with flattening of the diaphragm. The heart and pulmonary vasculature are not well identified. The right 8th and 9th ribs are fractured.

Case Discussion

A nasal swab culture was positive for Pasteuralla and E. coli, with large numbers of anaerobic mixed growth. Due to rabbit's small size, culture of the lower airways is challenging.
