Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Presents with 5-week history of lameness.

Patient Data

Age: 8 years
Gender: Spayed female
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Golden retriever

Left thoracic limb

x-ray

There is an osteolytic lesion in the distal metaphysis and diphysis of the radius. The cortices are thin, and there is lysis of the medullary cavity. There is irregular periosteal reaction with associated soft tissue swelling on the dorsal and medial aspects of the carpus. There is enthesiophyte production on the distal accessory carpal bone.

Impression:

Primary bone tumor, likely osteosarcoma.

Case Discussion

An amputation was successfully performed. Histopathology revealed an osteoblastic (productive type) osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in dogs. It affects larger dogs more frequently, and the distal radial metaphysis is a predisposed site. A useful mnemonic for the sites in long bones is "Away from the elbow and towards the stifle". Characteristics include cortical lysis and prominent periosteal reaction. The enthesiophytes on the accessory carpal bone are likely degenerative change.
