Presentation
History of wheezing and coughing with episodes of cyanosis.
Patient Data
There is a focal, broad-based mineral opacity in the ventral thoracic trachea. The mass occupies approximately 70% of the lumen of the trachea. There is a diffuse interstitial pattern throughout the lungs.
Obstructive intramural tracheal mass.
The mass was visualized with bronchoscopy, and confirmed a broad base covered by epithelium. The mass occupied the majority of the tracheal lumen.
Case Discussion
Osteochrondroma was diagnosed on histopathology. The tumor was comprised of cartilaginous tissue capping trabecular bone with bone marrow, covered by respiratory epithelium. It was removed with endoscopic cautery and laser resection, and the clinical signs improved. Prognosis is considered good for this type of benign growth.
Radiographic differential diagnosis includes
osteochrondroma/chondroma
carcinoma
lymphoma
Osteochondromas typically occur in the long bones of young dogs at the level of the physis. The age of this dog supports a developmental disorder.
