Case Discussion

This miniature Dachshund is a chondrodystrophic breed, which makes the humerus short and more difficult to extend cranial to the thorax. There is some superimposition of the triceps musculature on the cranial thorax.

In barrel-shaped breeds such as this, the dorso-ventral dimension of the thorax is smaller than the lateral dimension, making the heart look larger relative to the thoracic volume on the lateral projection. However on the dorsoventral projection, the heart is normal in proportion to the width of the thorax. The lungs are also easier to evaluate on the dorsoventral projection.
