Presentation
Presents with respiratory distress and exopthalmos of the right eye.
Patient Data
There is increased soft tissue opacity filling the nasal cavity and frontal sinuses. There is turbinate destruction visible on the ventrodorsal projection. There is lysis of the right frontal bone in the region of the orbit. Smooth periosteal proliferation is visible on the frontal bone on the lateral projection.
There is a soft tissue opacity mass filling the entire nasal cavity and frontal sinuses from the level of the maxillary canine teeth caudally. There is extensive turbinate destruction on the right side, with destruction of the nasal septum and continuation of the turbinate destruction to the left. The right nasal and frontal bones are affected by expansion and multifocal lysis. There is also thinning and permeation of the right palatine bone. The mass extends through the right frontal bone within the orbit causing exopthalmos. There is irregular periosteal reaction on the frontal bone. The choana is partially filled by the mass, and there is destruction of the cribriform plate on the right dorsal aspect. Soft tissue material fills the frontal sinuses.
Case Discussion
Diagnosis of the type of nasal mass was not pursued. Differential diagnoses include adenocarcinoma, or less likely lymphoma, chondrosarcoma. The extent of the mass, filling the entire nasal cavity, and destruction of the cribriform plate indicate the aggressive and advanced nature of the disease, with limited treatment options.
Compare the radiographs to the normal dog skull (vID 73941) and note the opacity of the frontal sinuses and the trabecular pattern in the nasal cavity.
