Presentation
Presents with urinary tract infections twice in the last 6 months.
Patient Data
The liver is small with a small distance between the diaphragm and stomach, and cranial displacement of the gastric axis. The abdomen is otherwise normal.
Microhepatia.
Case Discussion
No clinical signs or underlying cause identified since urinary calculi were ruled out with imaging. The liver appeared normal on ultrasound examination. Differential diagnoses for a small liver include a portosystemic shunt and degenerative change such as cirrhosis. Normal variations in anatomy may also occur. Microscopic causes such as portal vascular hypoplasia require biopsy for diagnosis.
