Patient Data

Age: 8 years
Gender: Female
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Rat Terrier

Thorax

x-ray

There are several ill-defined soft tissue nodular opacities on the dorsoventral projection. These are incompletely marginated and somewhat symmetrically positioned. These may be artifacts of superimposition from mammary tissue.

Case Discussion

Structures on the skin surface can mimic pulmonary nodules because they are surrounded by air and appear quite opaque for their small size. Searching the skin surface on the radiographs and on the lateral can reveal potential skin nodules causing this appearance. Marking them with radiopaque material such as barium can help to identify the relationship between views.
