Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Labrador retriever

Abdomen

x-ray

There is a large amount of solid material in the stomach, with separation from the gastric wall. This is also visible in the pyloric region on the left lateral projection surrounded by air, indicating it is fixed in the pyloric region. The duodenum appears plicated on the v/d projection and contains foreign material. There are multiple additional loops with a plicated pattern in the mid abdomen. There are also unusually shaped gas bubbles within the intestinal loops, and several loops appear enlarged, containing foreign material. The liver, spleen, kidneys, and urinary bladder appear normal. This is a mechanical obstruction caused by linear/textile foreign body.

Case Discussion

At surgery, foreign material comprised of cloth and plastic were removed from the stomach and small intestine. The imaging signs of linear foreign body are plication of the small intestine, fixed foreign material in the pylorus which is often acting as an anchor, and unusually shaped gas bubbles inside the plicated small intestine.
