Patient Data

Age: 3 years
Gender: Spayed female
Category: Carnivore
Organism: Ferret

Abdomen

x-ray

The stomach is markedly distended with fluid and a small amount of gas. There is at least one segment of small bowel which is also severely distended with fluid and contains a single large bubble of gas. Multiple small bowel loops are identified which are empty. A small amount of soft appearing feces is present in the colon.

Impression:

Mechanical small intestinal obstruction.

Case Discussion

The marked enlargement of the small intestine and stomach indicate a chronic small intestinal obstruction. It takes time for the gastrointestinal tract to distend to this degree.

A laparotomy and enterotomy was performed, and a rubber foreign body was removed from the mid-jejunum.
