Intestinal foreign body

Case contributed by Allison L Zwingenberger
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Burmese python who ingested a rat along with a blanket used in the cage.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female
Category: Reptile
Organism: Python molurus bivittatus

Abdomen

x-ray

Multiple dorsoventral projections of the body are available for review. Linear amorphous heterogenous opacity consistent with fiber is visible throughout the proximal GI tract. A complete small animal skeleton, most likely the rat the snake also ingested, is visible immediately caudal to the fiber material. Radiopaque markers were placed to aid in surgical planning.

Impression:

Mechanical intestinal obstruction.

Blanket removal

Photograph

A laparotomy was performed and the blanket was removed from the intestinal tract.

Case Discussion

Foreign body ingestion (blanket). The striations in the fabric are characteristic of textile foreign bodies, and were particularly visible in this case due to extent and minimal overlying structures.
