Abdomen

x-ray

The stomach is markedly enlarged in size and contains homogenous fluid and gas opacity. It appears to be in a normal anatomic location. There are 2 segments of small intestine that are markedly dilated in size with fluid and gas. There is a loop of bowel in the caudal left abdomen that contains amorphous soft tissue to mineral opacity. There is a separate population of small intestines that are of normal size. Marked gastric and small intestinal dilation with fluid and gas with possible foreign object in the caudal left abdomen is suggestive of chronic or proximal gastrointestinal obstruction.

Case Discussion

Abdominal ultrasound confirmed the intestinal foreign body. The two different sizes of bowel loops, enlarged and normal, indicate that there is an obstruction that is not allowing food and fluid to pass through the small intestine. The degree of dilation can be more in chronic obstructions or in those more proximally located.
