Abdomen

x-ray

There is a distended small intestinal loop visible in the left ventral abdomen containing a mineralized structure. The other visible small intestinal loops are normal in size. The remaining abdominal organs appear normal.

Mechanical obstruction, likely proximally located.

Case Discussion

An exploratory laparotomy was performed, and a small piece of rubber was removed from the proximal jejunum via enterotomy. The marked contrast between the enlarged loop of intestine and the normal sized intestine indicates a mechanical obstruction with evidence of foreign material in the lumen. This evidence indicates that surgery is needed to resolve the obstruction.
