Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Norwich terrier

Abdomen

x-ray

There is an enlarged small intestinal loop in the right ventral abdomen containing a round, gas filled foreign object. Several small intestinal loops are enlarged, and others are normal sized. The liver, spleen and urinary tract appear normal.

Mechanical obstruction of the small intestine by a foreign body (possibly seed).

Case Discussion

A large seed and plant material were removed from the jejunum at surgery. Recovery was uneventful.

Plant seeds often have gas filled central cavities, which can provide a clue to the cause of the obstruction on radiographs.
