Presentation

Progressive lethargy and inappetence for 1 week. Over the course of two hours became non-ambulatory.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic cat
Organism: Domestic shorthaired cat

Thorax

x-ray

The cardiac silhouette is enlarged. There is increased opacity in the pleural space with retraction of the lung lobes and widened pleural fissure lines. There is also a bronchointerstitial pattern throughout the lungs with regions of alveolar opacity. The pulmonary veins are mildly enlarged. In the portion of the abdomen included, the liver is enlarged and there is mildly decreased peritoneal detail.

Case Discussion

Cardiac disease with heart failure causing pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, and hepatic congestion.

3rd degree AV block was diagnosed on ECG. The owner elected euthanasia, and severe myocardial degeneration with fibrosis and fat deposition was seen on histopathology. The liver was passively congested.
