Presentation

Presents with three-week history of vomiting and diarrhea, and onset of hematemesis today.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Lhasa apso

Abdomen

x-ray

The abdomen is not distended and the peritoneal detail is good. The liver and spleen are normal in size. There is a small amount of granular material in the stomach. The duodenum and jejunum are diffusely, mildly gas filled. The colon contains feces. No abnormalities are noted in the urinary tract. There is no evidence of mechanical obstruction.

Case Discussion

Gastroenteritis. Medical treatment was instituted and further diagnostics were not performed at this time. Gastroenteritis often presents with an empty or mildly gas filled intestinal tract. The chronic history is more suggestive of an inflammatory disorder than a mechanical obstruction.
