Presentation

Presents with vomiting and panting for one day.

Patient Data

Age: 13 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic cat
Organism: Domestic longhaired cat

Abdomen

x-ray

The liver and spleen are normal in size and shape. The stomach is markedly distended with granular contents that fill the gastric lumen on all projections. The peritoneal detail is good. The small intestine is mildly gas filled in some regions however appears normal in diameter. The colon contains some fecal material. The kidneys and urinary bladder are normal.

Gastric foreign material.

Case Discussion

A gastric foreign body (trichobezoar) was removed via gastrotomy. Although the presentation was acute, the size of the stomach and nature of the foreign material likely indicate a chronic accumulation of hair and other material.
