Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Spayed female
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Bullmastiff

Abdomen

x-ray

There are several cylindrical soft tissue opacities with organized lucencies consistent with corn cobs within the gastric lumen. The stomach is otherwise empty. The small bowel is diffusely gas and fluid filled with no evidence of pathologic dilation or intestinal foreign bodies. One kidney appears small on the right lateral projection. There is marked ventral spondylosis deformans in the caudal lumbar vertebral column.

Case Discussion

The corn cob has a distinctive appearance on radiographs, forming linear rows of rectangular gas filled structures. The foreign bodies remained static the following day, and four pieces were removed surgically.
