Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Longhaired standard dachshund

Abdomen

x-ray

The stomach is markedly dilated by soft tissue attenuating material with a reticulated pattern. A metallic earring foreign body is present in the enlarged stomach. The stomach extends to the mid abdomen and is causing a mass effect that displaces the small intestine and spleen caudally. The colon is moderately dilated with gas.

Gastrotomy

Photograph

A gastrotomy was performed and a trichobezoar was occupying the entire gastric lumen. The mass was comprised of hair, plastic Christmas tree needles, multiple pieces of yarn, and ingesta.

Case Discussion

The chronic nature of this obstruction is evident from the long history of clinical signs. The material may have accumulated gradually and increased in size over time.
