Abdomen

x-ray

The stomach is markedly distended containing heterogeneous soft tissue opaque material. The stomach is in an appropriate anatomic location; however, is causing a caudal mass effect of the small and large bowel loops. The pylorus is visible on the left lateral projection. The small bowel is diffusely gas dilated with homogeneous soft tissue opaque material found sporadically throughout these loops. The descending colon contains granular fecal material. There is a broad-based soft tissue to fat opaque mass along the cranioventral abdomen consistent with a lipoma.

Gastric dilation with foreign material (dough).

Case Discussion

The normal positions of the pylorus and fundus indicate that though the stomach is dilated, it has not undergone volvulus. The dog presented in hypovolemic shock, and the stomach was not able to be decompressed by passing a stomach tube. An exploratory laparotomy was performed, and the stomach was found to have ruptured along the greater curvature. There is no evidence of rupture on the radiographs.
