Presentation
Presented from shelter with suspected trauma.
Patient Data
There is a complete, closed long oblique fracture of the mid diaphysis of the right tibia with mild lateral and cranial displacement. The fracture margins are blunted and sclerotic. There is a moderate amount of smoothly margined new bone that is incompletely bridging. There is also a complete transverse fracture of the fibula at the same level. The fracture margins are also ill defined and sclerotic. There is moderate surrounding soft tissue swelling. The trabecular pattern of the distal tibia, fibula, tarsus and pes is coarse and there is decreased opacity of these bones.
Chronic healing malunion fractures of the right tibia and fibula with moderate soft tissue swelling and disuse osteopenia of the limb.
Case Discussion
The young age of the dog has resulted in a large amount of callus formation, however the rounding indicated it is not bridging properly. Some of the soft tissue surrounding the fracture is likely fibrous tissue that is aiding stabilization. The fracture gap indicates that the fracture is not healed, likely due to the motion between fragments. The angle between fracture fragments indicates it is unstable, or is healing with a malunion conformation.
