Pelvis

x-ray

This is a study consisting of one lateral and one VD projection of the pelvis and hind limbs. There is a transverse fracture of the distal metaphysis of the left femur that includes the proximal portion of the physis. There is minimal comminution and no evidence of an open wound. The distal femur is displaced caudally and proximally and slightly medially. The margins of the fracture are indistinct and round. There is mild soft tissue swelling. Overall bone quality is good.

Type II Salter-Harris fracture of the left femur. Mild soft tissue swelling.

6 weeks postoperatively

x-ray

The surgical implants are static in position and location. Smooth bone callus is present surrounding the previous fracture site, which is no longer identified. There is moderate intracapsular effusion of the stifle joint. There is fragmented metallic material present within the colon.

Healed left femoral fracture. Static surgical implants. Moderate persistent left stifle joint effusion. Colonic foreign material.

Case Discussion

Young animals have active bone remodeling and heal completely in a few weeks. With stablilization and good alignment, there is minimal callus formation around the fracture.
