Presentation
Presents with regurgitation for the last month.
Patient Data
Liquid barium was administered orally. There is marked distention of the caudal thoracic esophagus. Liquid barium can be seen pooling in this region with intermittent propulsion and retropulsion and very little contrast passing through the lower esophageal sphincter. There also appears to be semi-circular smoothly margined filling defect at a level just cranial to the lower esophageal sphincter. This patient was subsequently imaged in a vertical orientation and this filling defect is more pronounced in this orientation.
An esophageal mass was identified proximal to the lower esophageal sphincter at endoscopy.
Case Discussion
An esophageal mass was confirmed with endoscopy. Biopsies were taken however these did not penetrate to the submucosa, and the diagnosis was epithelial hyperplasia. The mass was suspected to be a leiomyoma or leiomyosarcoma.
