A small, angular, poorly defined mineral opacity is present within the caudal esophagus. The esophagus is markedly gas filled orad to this, throughout both the cervical and thoracic regions. There is alveolar pattern in the left caudal lung lobe seen on the ventrodorsal projection.   Within the viewable abdomen, there is an angular mineral opacity is visible within the gastric fundus on the VD projection. The liver is mildly enlarged, extending past the costal arch. A few small rounded mineral opacities are seen within the fat dorsal to the scapulae and are an incidental finding.

Case Discussion

Esophageal foreign body with possible pneumonia in the left caudal lung. Gastric foreign material. The pulmonary opacity may be non-cardiogenic edema secondary to the respiratory difficulty or atypical pneumonia.

The esophageal foreign body was advanced into the stomach using endoscopy. A gastrotomy was performed, and bones, rubber material, and vegetable material were removed. The bone in the esophagus was ingested during a picnic earlier in the day.

The dog was oxygen dependent for three days and then was discharged with improved respiratory function.
