Esophageal foreign body

Presentation

Was fed a bone two days previously and vomited up pieces of bone. Vomits immediately when fed.

Patient Data

Age: 3 years
Gender: Spayed female
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: West Highland white terrier

Thorax

x-ray

There is an oval mineral opacity object in the caudal esophagus between the heart and the diaphragm. The esophagus is moderately dilated with gas. The pulmonary parenchyma is normal. The stomach is empty, and the portion of the abdomen included appears normal.

Endoscopy

Photograph

The foreign body could not be retrieved and was pushed into the stomach to dissolve naturally.

Case Discussion

Esophageal foreign body consistent with the history of ingesting a bone and confirmed with endoscopy The dilation of the esophagus may indicate esophagitis. There is no evidence of aspiration pneumonia, which is a common complication of esophageal disorders.
