Thorax

x-ray

There is increased soft tissue opacity in the right cranial and right caudal lung lobes. Air bronchograms are visible in these regions. There are multiple small mineral opacities within the right caudal lung lobe. There is a widened mediastinum and the heart is mildly enlarged.

Case Discussion

Eosinophilic inflammation was diagnosed on cytology (right cranial lung lobe aspirate). Eosinophilic syndrome, eosinophilic or parasitic granulomas were considered as differential diagnoses.

The cat was treated with prednisone and fenbendazole, and the right cranial lung lobe opacity resolved over 5 months. The right caudal lung lobe changes remained static. The lesser opacity of the right caudal lung lobe suggested a component of atelectasis.

The cat remained on steroid therapy and was expected to need lifelong treatment.
