Presentation
Presents with two-week history of cough. No response to antibiotics.
Patient Data
There is a marked bronchial pattern throughout the lungs. The bronchial walls appear thickened with examples of tram tracks and doughnuts. There is also a patchy interstitial pattern present.
Impression:
Non-infectious inflammatory airway disorder such as eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy.
Case Discussion
Bronchial lavage showed marked eosinophilic inflammation with increased mucus. Eosinophilia and basophilia on complete blood count. Small numbers of Staphylococcus intermedius were cultured, and the dog was placed on antibiotics and mucolytics. There was no fungal growth.
The primarily bronchial pattern paired with eosinophilia is characteristic of this type of bronchial disease. Eosinophilia is often associated with allergic or parasitic reactions.
