Eosinophilic and neutrophilic lung disease

Case contributed by Allison L Zwingenberger
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Presented with coughing 3-4 times per day for 10 weeks since adopted from a shelter.

Patient Data

Age: 4 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: English cocker spaniel

Thorax

x-ray

There is a diffuse bronchial pattern with thickened bronchial walls and bronchiectasis demonstrated by poorly tapering airways. There is increased soft tissue opacity dorsal to the carina, as well as a patchy alveolar pattern in the left cranial, left caudal and right caudal lung lobes. The cardiovascular structures are within normal limits.

Impression:

Chronic lower airway disease of infectious or noninfectious inflammatory origin. Possible hilar lymphadenopathy.

Case Discussion

A bronchoalveolar lavage was performed, which showed mild neutrophilic and eosinophilic inflammation. The dog was treated medically and improved to coughing once per day, however the radiographic signs remained static. These changes were likely too advanced to be able to resolve.
