Presentation

Presents with lameness and pain in the pelvic region. Progression to ataxia.

x-ray

On lateral projections of the spine, there are multifocal areas of lysis centered on intervertebral disc spaces (T10-11, T13-L1, L4-5, L6-7). There is sclerosis of the vertebral bodies surrounding the lytic lesions. Varying degrees of spondylosis deformans are present ventrally.

Multifocal discospondylitis.

Case Discussion

Multifocal discospondylitis secondary to Aspergillus infection. Serum and urine were antigen positive, and fungal hyphae were seen on histopathologic sections.

Aspergillosis is common in German Shepherd dogs and presents as multifocal infections involving the intervertebral discs, thoracic and abdominal lymph nodes, and the urinary tract.
