Presentation
Presents with polyuria, polydipsia, and reluctance to jump on bed.
Patient Data
On lateral survey radiographs of the spine, there are multiple intervertebral disc spaces affected by vertebral endplate lysis with surrounding sclerosis. The largest of these appear to be C3-4 and L1-2. Multiple additional thoracic and lumbar intervertebral disc spaces are affected.
Discospondylitis.
On abdominal ultrasound, a thrombus was identified in the aorta. The mural lesion is free-moving and is not obstructing blood flow.
Case Discussion
Discospondylitis is often found in multiple vertebral locations and in different stages of progression. Symmetric endplate lysis is indicative of an inflammatory process centered on the intervertebral disc. In German Shepherd dogs, Aspergillosis is a common organ of origin. The underlying infection can be a urinary tract infection or other location with hematogenous spread.
