Thorax

x-ray

The cardiac silhouette is not well seen due to increased opacity in the pleural space. There is an increase interstitial opacity in the pulmonary parenchyma. The diaphragm is not visible. The trachea is displaced dorsally. There are abdominal organs in the thoracic cavity and the small bowel loops are visible mostly on the right side, extending to the level of the 2 ribs. The cecum is visible at the 10th intercostal space on the ventrodorsal projection, and the colon crosses the diaphragm on the lateral projection. The abdomen is empty, and the kidneys are ventrally positioned.

Case Discussion

Right sided diaphragmatic hernia and pleural effusion. At surgery, there was a right sided tear in the diaphragm with displacement of the liver, half of the spleen, small intestine, stomach, and pancreas into the thorax. The lung lobes on that side were atalectic. The rent was repaired and the dog made a full recovery.
