Presentation

Presents with difficulty swallowing and aspiration pneumonia.

Patient Data

Age: 6 months
Gender: Spayed female
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Dachshund superbreed of dog

Esophagram

Fluoroscopy

On liquid barium phase of the esophagram, the upper esophageal sphincter remains closed for the majority of swallow attempts. A minimal amount of opening allows some barium to pass into the esophagus. There is immediate aspiration into the proximal trachea.

Case Discussion

Cricopharyngeal achalasia. The dog was treated with a laser myotomy of the upper esophageal sphincter with partial response, and partial myectomy with full response.
