Presentation
Blue and yellow macaw presented with swollen digit for 2 months.
Patient Data
Right pelvic limb: There is swelling of the 4th digit distal to a soft tissue constriction. The phalanx at the level of the constriction is narrowed and atrophied without evidence of lysis.
Left pelvic limb: The 1st digit of the left pelvic limb is absent secondary to previous amputation. No other abnormalities are noted.
The photos show the marked swelling of the 4th digit distal to a constriction near the base of the digit.
Case Discussion
Constricted toe syndrome with osseous atrophy and digital edema.
Constricted toe syndrome is a band of fibrous tissue that forms around a digit and impedes circulation. It is most common in neonatal macaws and Eclectus parrots.
