Thorax and pelvic limb

x-ray

There are smoothly marginated expansions of bone involving the left 6th rib and right mid tibia. These regions have trabecular bone patterns and are not associated with periosteal reaction. The thoracic mass occupies a significant portion of the left hemithorax. Multiple thoracic spinous processes have rounded, adjacent bone expansions. The right tibial lesion affects the caudal cortex with a short zone of transition, and extends to the metaphysis occupying the majority of the medullary cavity.

Case Discussion

Mature cartilaginous exostoses. Cancellous bone with multifocal retention of cartilage was found on biopsy.

The dog has reached skeletal maturity as the growth plates have closed, and the lesions should not grow any larger. Treatment could be considered if they are causing lameness or other interference. These lesion can transform into osteosarcoma or chondrosarcoma in older animals.
