Presentation

Screening a litter of Chihuahuas for musculoskeletal abnormalities.

Patient Data

Age: 3 years
Gender: Castrated male
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Chihuahua superbreed

Spine/Pelvis

x-ray

There is diffuse increased bone density to all bones, with thickened cortices and increased radiopacity. There is irregular mineralization of the soft tissues surrounding both scapulohumeral joints. There is also mineralization of the dorsal spinous ligaments.

Case Discussion

Diffuse skeletal osteopetrosis and calcinosis circumscripta. Two littermates were similarly affected. The cause was suspected to be a calcium phosphorous imbalance as phosphorus levels were elevated. Calcinosis circumscripta nodules also developed in the feet.
