Thorax

x-ray

The thorax is hypoinflated on all projections. There is a diffuse bronchial pattern throughout the lungs. The bronchi have thickened walls with variable diameters and widening and do not taper in the lung periphery. On the dorsoventral projection, the bronchi are collapsed and difficult to visualize. In the portion of the abdomen included, the stomach is filled with food.

Case Discussion

Bronchiectasis is widening of the airways due to chronic inflammation and deterioration of the support structure of the walls. The bronchi have thickened walls but are more distensible and also collapsible.

On endoscopic examination, there was severe lower airway collapse and inflammation. Septic inflammation with Pasteurella was cultured from bronchial exudate.
