Thorax

x-ray

There is a mediastinal shift to the left with hyperinflation of the right lung lobes. There is a mass effect dorsal to the carina, with collapse of the left lung lobes and cranial displacement of the left diaphragmatic crus. The cardiac silhouette is partially obscured by the opacity but seems normal in size.

Case Discussion

Bronchial obstruction by pulmonary mass (carcinoma) causing atelectasis and mediastinal shift. The left cranial lung lobe was resected, and carcinoma was diagnosed on histopathology. The obstruction of a bronchus by an invading or compressive mass near the origin of the bronchus causes loss of air in the entire lung lobe.
