Patient Data

Age: 6 months
Gender: Female
Category: Domestic dog
Organism: Miniature pinscher dog

Thorax

x-ray

There is a severe mediastinal shift to the left and minimal inflation of the left lung lobes. The air bronchogram in the left lung shows dilated, poorly tapering bronchi. The right lung is hyperinflated and extends into the left cranial thorax. The cardiovsacular structures are normal. No abnormalities are noted in the neck.

Case Discussion

Congenital bronchial dysplasia with collapse of the left lung and hyperinflation of the right lung. Because the left lung lobes are collapsed, the radiographs look similar on both projections as only the right lung is providing aerated tissue for contrast.

The left cranial lung lobe was surgically removed. Histologically, the bronchi were malformed and the lungs were atelectatic. The lumens of the bronchi were collapsed or absent and surrounded by smooth muscle and collagenous tissue. There was no respiratory epithelium present. The alveoli were collapsed.
