Thorax

x-ray

There is a large soft tissue mass arising from the soft tissues between the pharynx and the C1 vertebra. The mass is convex, displacing the dorsal wall of the pharynx ventrally and is causing narrowing of the airway.

The thoracic organs are normal.

Retropharyngeal mass.

Retropharyngeal region

ultrasound

Ultrasound of the neck showed a thick, irregularly walled mass with a center filled with echogenic fluid. These are characteristics of an abscess.

Case Discussion

A mass in this region may be caused by a neoplastic structure such as a lymph node, or by infected tissue in a normal structure (lymph node) or in the musculature. Migrating grass awns may cause abscesses if ingested into the oral cavity and then penetrate the pharynx.

Fine needle aspirate and cytology revealed septic and suppurative inflammation. The abscess was treated with antibiotics and resolved within two weeks. Since surgical debridement was not performed, the underlying cause of the abscess was not discovered.
