Presentation and Patient Data

Last revised by Allison L Zwingenberger on 22 Apr 2025

Presentation and Patient data are the next sections you need to fill in.

The patient's presentation section in a case is designed to contain a simple one or two line statement describing the patient's presentation. This is used in quiz mode and helps to frame the case.

Patient demographics can be left to the patient data section.

Examples include:

  • sudden onset of ataxia
  • chronic lameness
  • chronic cough, with recent weight loss
  • don't include the diagnosis
  • try not to give away too many clues
  • don't make the presentation too long and involved

Patient data is a section in cases (visible in edit mode) where patient demographics can be entered. The two fields are:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Category (roughly based on species). Required field before choosing organism.
  • Organism - SNOMED CT preferred term. This includes breeds of domestic animals.

Please round the patient age to the nearest 1 year for adult animals, and to whole weeks or months for animals less than one year old.

The format should include the units of time (usually "years"). For example:

  • 7 years
  • 4 months
  • 3 weeks

No full stop/period should be included after the word "years", "months", or "days".

  • "10 years" not "10 years."

Choose from male or female, spayed or neutered, or unknown.

Choose the most appropriate broad category that the animal fits into. These are based on SNOMED CT classifications of animal groups.

  • Domestic dog
  • Domestic cat
  • Horse
  • Domestic cattle
  • European Rabbit
  • Bird
  • Rodent
  • Reptile
  • Amphibian
  • Carnivore
  • Even-toed ungulate
  • Fish
  • Goat
  • Other animal
  • Pig
  • Primate
  • Sheep

Based on what category you choose, a list of possible organisms will appear when you start typing. There are thousands of SNOMED CT terms available in the list. If you can't find a specific term, please check the SNOMED CT browser at https://vtsl.vetmed.vt.edu/ or email the Vetlucent editors for help.
